How to stay grounded in shadow work
Shadow work is a transformative journey, but let’s be real—it’s not easy. Confronting your wounds and patterns can feel destabilizing, even overwhelming. That’s why staying grounded is essential. It’s what keeps you tethered to yourself as you navigate the depths.
Why Grounding Matters
Shadow work can activate your nervous system, bringing up memories, emotions, and sensations that feel like too much all at once. Grounding helps you stay present, reminding you that you are safe and in control of your healing journey.
Grounding Practices to Support Shadow Work
Breathwork: Use your breath to anchor yourself in the present moment. Try box breathing: Inhale for four counts, hold for four counts, exhale for four counts, and hold for four counts. Repeat until you feel more centered.
Somatic Grounding: Bring your awareness to your body. Wiggle your fingers and toes. Feel the weight of your body against the ground or chair. Focus on physical sensations to pull yourself out of your head.
Earthing: If possible, spend time outside with your bare feet on the earth. Nature has an incredible ability to regulate your energy and help you feel grounded.
Create a Safe Space: Set up a physical space for shadow work that feels comforting. Light candles, use grounding crystals like hematite or black tourmaline, and surround yourself with objects that bring you peace.
Grounding Affirmations: Repeat affirmations to remind yourself of your strength and safety. Examples:
“I am safe in my body.”
“I am present and grounded.”
“I have the power to hold space for my healing.”
Aftercare for Shadow Work Once you’ve finished a shadow work session, take time to care for yourself. Drink water, eat something nourishing, and engage in activities that bring you joy. Shadow work can be intense, but grounding practices ensure you stay balanced and supported as you transform.
Remember, healing is not a sprint—it’s a journey. Stay rooted, trust the process, and honor yourself every step of the way.
